Burnishing Clay
Poliment
Poliment is a specially prepared clay (bolus), which serves as a base for the gold leaf at water gilding.
Gesso and several layers of burnishing clay (poliment) generates the substrate composition, which makes it possible to polish/burnish the gold to a high gloss. The technique of water gilding can only be applied to absorbent substrates.
